Police Vocabulary

The topic is the police. There is some specific term we use in the world of the police. I know the terms in French but I need to translate them into English. It is a little bit tricky to translate the right word in English. I decide to make it for the people who know nothing about the police. There are a lot of specific words. I can't write all the words because there are too many words. I will try to put the most useful words.

Larceny

Noun

A theft of personal property

Example: Paul committed larceny, stealing over $1,000 from his business partner.

Forgery

Noun

A fake document, bill or work intended for a criminal purpose

Example: The banknotes were clearly forged. He was arrested on charges of forgery.

Apprehend

Verb

To arrest (someone) for a crime.

Example: He was apprehended for murder later that day and would appear on trial on 1 October.

Abscond

Verb

To leave hurriedly and secretly, typically to avoid detection of or arrest for an unlawful action such as theft.

Example: He tried to abscond the country, but it was too late. He was arrested on the plane before it took off.

Cell

Noun

It is a small room in which a prisoner is locked up or in which a monk or nun sleeps.

Example: The prisoners can not escape their cell.

Cop, cooper

Noun

It is the common name for a police officer.

Example: The cops are on route.

Crime scene

Noun

The place where an offense has been committed and forensic evidence may be gathered.

Example: The crime scene had been contaminated.

a person who is responsible for a crime or other misdeed

Example: The culprit was 6 feet tall, 300 pounds and was found by the police enjoying a meal in McDonalds.

The protective care or guardianship of someone or something

Fingerprints

Noun

It is an impression or mark made on a surface by a person's fingertip, especially as used for identifying individuals from the unique pattern of whorls and lines.

Example: The suspect left several fingerprints on the crime scene.

It is a rifle, pistol, or other portable guns.

Example: The criminal shoots the victim with a firearm.

It is been not responsible for a crime.

Example: The suspect is innocent until proven guilty.

Perjury

Noun

The offense of willfully telling an untruth in a court after having taken an oath or affirmation.

Example: The criminal committed perjury by lying to a police officer.

Prosecution

Noun

It is the institution and conducting of legal proceedings against someone in respect of a criminal charge.

Example: He was prosecuted for manslaughter.

Summons

It is an order to appear before a judge or magistrate, or the writ containing it.

Example: A summons was issued for Nathan to appear in court on 10 August.

To arrest

Verb

To seize (someone) by legal authority and take into custody.

Example: The police arrest the criminals.

To corroborate

Verb

To confirm or give support to (a statement, theory, or finding).

Example: The witness corroborated with the police to find the murder of his neighbors.

Vagrancy

Noun

It is the state of living as a vagrant; homelessness.

Example: The vagrant moved from street to street each week, never having a permanent place to call home.

A person who sees an event, typically a crime or accident, take place.

Example: There were many witnesses from the stolen bank.

Noun

It is a minor who commits a crime (usually under the age of 18).

Example: The young offender had been tracked on an aggravated theft.
